About the Mapathon and Mapathon Locations

During this three day mapping event, local businesses, community groups and OSM members will join together to launch a citywide initiative to help make the map of Atlanta one of the best in the US. This fun, family friendly event will be held at Atlanta-Fulton Public Library branches across Atlanta and people interested in learning more about OSM and how open maps can benefit their community and spur economic development are encouraged to attend. We are also encouraging people to get out and map their neighborhoods, in addition to working as a group to add points of interest to public spaces and local attractions. Please register for this event here: http://tinyurl.com/ndoxye

We will be mapping the downtown Atlanta area including parks, university campuses and historic sites. Volunteers will be on hand to help new mappers learn how to use a GPS or Walking-Papers and have helpful tips for beginners. Come for the whole day or just stop by for an hour to learn the basics of community mapping and add a few points of interest to the map.

One of the easiest ways to participate during the Mapathon is to browse through OSM and investigate the map of your neighborhood for naming inaccuracies, missing roads and attractions. With just a few clicks of a mouse it is possible for anyone to make these types of minor edits. We are also encouraging neighborhood associations, church groups and clubs to get out into their local communities and record the names and locations of pubic amenities, attractions and local businesses. Mappers can drop off the information they gathered at any of the Mapathon locations if they are unable to edit the map but would like to contribute data from their neighborhood. Volunteers will also be on hand to help people who need instruction or assistance adding their traces and points of interest to the map.
